Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin song lyrics serve as a dynamic medium for cultural expression, particularly among urban youth. In these lyrics, meaning is constructed through the interplay of rhythmic language, slang, and innovative wordplay. Urban youth employ Nigerian Pidgin not only to entertain but also to comment on social issues, personal identity, and cultural hybridity (Adeniyi, 2023). Lyrics often feature layered semantic content, where words carry multiple connotations and metaphoric meanings that resonate with the lived experiences of young people. The informal, evolving nature of Nigerian Pidgin allows for creative semantic experimentation, leading to shifts in meaning that reflect contemporary trends and social realities. This study examines how urban musicians and lyricists negotiate meaning in their compositions, analyzing textual data from popular songs, music videos, and online platforms. By exploring patterns of metaphor, idiom, and semantic ambiguity, the research seeks to uncover the cognitive and cultural mechanisms that drive meaning construction in Nigerian Pidgin music. Such an investigation provides insights into the role of music as both an artistic form and a vehicle for social commentary in modern Nigerian society (Okeke, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although Nigerian Pidgin song lyrics are recognized for their rich semantic layers, there is scant research examining how urban youth construct meaning in these texts. Preliminary observations suggest that the rapid evolution of language online may lead to inconsistent interpretations and potential miscommunications among diverse audiences. This study addresses the gap by analyzing semantic strategies in Pidgin lyrics and their cultural impact.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify key semantic strategies used in Nigerian Pidgin song lyrics.
  • To analyze how these strategies construct layered meanings.
  • To assess the cultural implications of semantic innovation in music.
    Research questions
  • What semantic devices are prevalent in Pidgin song lyrics?
  • How do urban youth negotiate multiple meanings in their lyrics?
  • What is the cultural impact of these semantic constructions?
    Significance of the study
This study contributes to our understanding of linguistic creativity in music, offering insights into how Nigerian Pidgin evolves in digital urban culture. Its findings will be useful for cultural analysts, music educators, and linguists interested in contemporary language use (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining semantic construction in Nigerian Pidgin song lyrics among urban youth and does not cover other genres or offline musical contexts.
    Definitions of terms
  • Meaning Construction: The process by which individuals interpret and generate meaning from language.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language used informally across Nigeria.
  • Urban Youth: Young people living in metropolitan areas.
